Overview
- In Science Tokyo LMS, you can use Turnitin Feedback Studio to check file submissions (Microsoft Word files, PowerPoint files, PDF files, etc.) for similarity
- Turnitin Feedback Studio reports the percentage of text that matches existing sources such as published literature (the similarity score)
- A high score alone does not mean that a submission is plagiarized
- Based on the similarity score and the Similarity Report, the instructor needs to make the judgment
- This page explains the steps and settings for using Turnitin Feedback Studio
Using Turnitin in the LMS
- In the LMS, Turnitin Feedback Studio checks files submitted through the Assignment activity
- Enable Turnitin only for file types that Turnitin can process
- Word files (.doc / .docx)
- PowerPoint files (.ppt / .pptx)
- PDF files, etc.
- Submissions with fewer than 20 words are not checked for similarity
- Turnitin is available in the LMS Assignment activity
- When creating or editing an assignment, set “Enable Turnitin” to “Yes” in the “Turnitin plagiarism plugin settings” section
Reference: File requirements for submitting your assignment to Turnitin
Default behavior
- If you set “Enable Turnitin” to “Yes” in an assignment and leave all other settings at their defaults, Turnitin works as follows.
- Files in formats that Turnitin Feedback Studio does not support cannot be uploaded to the assignment
- Submissions (files uploaded to the assignment) are stored in the Institute’s repository
- Similarity checks run on all submissions at once after the due date
- Submissions are compared with internet sources, publications, and submissions already stored in the repository
- This includes submissions from other students to the same assignment in the same course
- This also includes submissions from students in previous years
- To change this behavior, change the settings as described on this page
