Turnitin plagiarism plugin settings

Showing reports to students and allowed file types

  • Display Similarity Reports to Students [Default: No]
    • If set to “Yes”, students can view their own Similarity Reports
  • Allow submission of any file type? [Default: No]
    • In general, we recommend setting this to “No”
    • Set this to “Yes” to allow file types that cannot be checked for similarity (such as images, audio, or Pages files). These files can then be submitted to the assignment, but they are not checked for similarity

Where submissions are stored (repository)

  • Store Student Papers [Default: Institutional Repository (Where Applicable)]
    • Sets where student submissions are stored. Submissions stored in a repository are used for comparison when other submissions are checked for similarity
    • “No Repository”: Submissions are checked for similarity but are not stored in a repository. As a result, they are not used for comparison when future submissions are checked
    • “Standard Repository”: Submissions are stored in the repository that Turnitin manages and shares worldwide (the global paper repository)
    • “Institutional Repository”: Submissions are stored in a repository that only the Institute can access
    • We recommend “Institutional Repository”

What submissions are compared against

  • Check against stored student papers [Default: Yes]
    • When set to “Yes”, submissions are compared with earlier submissions to Turnitin-enabled assignments in the LMS
    • We recommend setting this to “Yes”
  • Check against internet [Default: Yes]
    • When set to “Yes”, submissions are compared with documents published on the internet
  • Check against journals, periodicals and publications [Default: Yes]
    • When set to “Yes”, submissions are compared with publications such as academic journals
  • Compare submitted files with papers submitted within this institution [Default: Yes]
    • When set to “Yes”, submissions are compared with submissions stored in the institutional repository
    • We recommend setting this to “Yes”

When similarity checks run

  • Report Generation Speed [Default: Generate reports on due date. …]
    • Sets when similarity checks run
    • “Generate reports immediately.”: Each submission is checked for similarity as soon as it is uploaded, and a Similarity Report is generated (only some submissions to the same assignment can be compared with each other)
    • “Submissions will be added to the repository immediately”: If a repository is selected in “Store Student Papers”, each submission is stored as soon as it is uploaded
    • “Submissions will be added to the repository on due date”: If a repository is selected in “Store Student Papers”, all submissions are stored at once after the assignment’s due date
    • “Generate reports on due date.”: After the assignment’s due date, all submissions are checked for similarity and Similarity Reports are generated. If a repository is selected in “Store Student Papers”, submissions are also added to the repository at this point. (All submissions to the same assignment can be compared with each other)
    • We recommend “Generate reports on due date.”

What is excluded from similarity checks

  • Exclude Bibliography [Default: Yes]
    • If a submission includes a bibliography, that section is excluded from the similarity check
  • Exclude Quoted Material [Default: Yes]
    • If a submission includes text in quotation marks, that text is excluded from the similarity check
  • Exclude Small Matches [Default: No]
    • Matches smaller than the value you set are excluded from the similarity check
    • Enter the threshold in “Exclusion Value”
    • “Words”: Sets the threshold as a number of words
    • “Percent”: Sets the threshold as a percentage

Translated Matching

  • Translated Matching [Default: No]
    • Submissions in languages other than English are translated into English and then checked for similarity
    • For details, see Using Translated Matching
